Prakash Javadekar hints at regulatory mechanism for CBSE schools. Stressing the need for a regulatory mechanism for CBSE schools, Union minister Prakash Javadekar today said the schools will be made "accountable" as far as their quality of education and charging of "unreasonable" fees was concerned. "There are CBSE schools in the country and I welcome private investment in education as quality education is needed. But it has come to light that once they get affiliation, there are no restrictions on these (CBSE) schools. (Zee News)

MAT online registration: Monday, May 1, is last date. Online registration deadline for the Management Aptitude Test or MAT has been extended to May 1. The test opens doors for students to about 600 B-schools, for admission to MBA and allied programmes. Approved by the HRD ministry as a national level test, MAT scores are considered by B-schools, national or international, as an input for admitting students. (HT)

JEE Main: Want to drop a year to get admission in IIT/ NIT? CBSE on April 27 announced the Joint Entrance Exams (JEE) Mains 2017 result in which about 2.2 lakh candidates qualified for JEE Advanced 2017. Yet, close to 10 lakh students have not made it this year. HRD Ministry puts plan for common engineering entrance exam on hold. The Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry has put on hold a move for a single entrance test for engineering courses across the country till states reach a consensus. The All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), the regulator for technical education in the country, had announced in March that a national-level common entrance examination for engineering colleges would be conducted from the next academic year in 2018. Udaipur boy Kalpit Veerval tops JEE-Main with 100% score. Udaipur boy Kalpit Veerval has topped the prestigious JEE Main 2017. Kalpit is the first student to score a perfect 100%, or 360 marks, in the JEE Main competition. A student of the MDS Senior Secondary School in Udaipur, Kalpit did not miss a single class throughout the year. "Everyone suggested that I should go to Kota or Hyderabad for coaching, but I didn't want to take studies as a burden. I wanted to enjoy what I learned. Thus, I decided to stay back in Udaipur and joined a coaching centre here," Kapit told TOI. (TOI)

JEE main 2017: Cut-off goes low, see what is required to qualify for JEE advanced. Students were greeted with a pleasant surprise as the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) declared the JEE Main 2017 results today and the cut-off for JEE advanced was unexpectedly low this year. The cut-off for the general category is 81, which brings a twist in prior predictions which believed the cut-off would be between 95 to 105 this year. (Indian Express)

CBSE to conduct NET exam in July: UGC. Ending the uncertainty over the National Eligibility Test (NET), the University Grants Commission has decided that the CBSE will conduct the exam in July. An official notification in this regard is likely to be released soon. The NET is held twice a year - July and December - for the grant of junior research fellowship and eligibility for assistant professorship in universities and colleges. (TOI)

HRD Ministry planning to make NCERT books mandatory for CBSE schools. The Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry is planning to make NCERT books compulsory for CBSE schools after receiving an overwhelming response from over 2,000 private schools for books published by the NCERT. It was after conducting a review of the educational council's capacity that the step has been planned. (India today)

Yogi Adityanath govt cancels 15 public holidays for schools, college students. On Tuesday, the Uttar Pradesh government cancelled 15 public holidays marking the birth or death anniversary of eminent personalities. On these days, students in schools and colleges would now be taught about them and their contribution to the nation. The decision was taken by the state Cabinet in a meeting chaired by chief minister Yogi Adityanath. (India today)

Delhi HC stays order upholding JNU admission policy based on UGC regulations. The Delhi High Court has stayed its single judge order upholding the Jawaharlal Nehru University's (JNU) admission policy for MPhil and PhD courses based on the UGC regulations. The July 2016 regulations of the University Grants Commission (UGC) had put a cap on the number of students per professor/supervisor in MPhil and PhD courses in all varsities. (Zee News)

CBSE scraps ‘marks moderation’, class 12 score to drop; grace marks to be disclosed in marksheets. Thirty two school boards have agreed to scrap the policy of “marks moderation” from this year in a bid to arrest the inflation of Class XII results witnessed over the last few years. The consensus was built during a three-hour-long meeting organised by the CBSE and attended by School Education Secretary Anil Swarup on Monday. (Indian Express)

Central University to be established for differently abled students: Prakash Javadekar. Prakash Javadekar announced that the Central government will soon be setting up a Central University which will cater to the needs of the disabled students across the country. The new education - inclusive in nature - where the differently abled are given education along with the normal kids inside the same classroom is a sign of free and new India, Javadekar said. (TOI)

The ‪‪Central Board of Secondary Education‬‬ (CBSE) on Saturday released NEET admit card 2017 for admissions to MBBS and BDS courses. NCERT to review school textbooks to update content; may include demonetisation. The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), an organisation that assists and advises the government on school education, has started an “internal review” of the contents of these textbooks. Council officials maintained that the review was meant to incorporate the developments in the past 10 years -- such as the goods and services tax (GST) and demonetisation. (HT)

Degrees obtained through open university online exams no more valid: UGC. The University Grants Commission's (UGC) distance education bureau recently observed that various institutions approved by the regulator are offering distance learning education and are breaching rules by offering online examinations. After this finding, the degrees obtained through online examinations will no more be considered valid, as India's higher education regulator said the rules don't allow such tests. (India Today)

‘Depressed’ IIT Kharagpur 4th-year student commits suicide. A fourth-year engineering student at IIT-Kharagpur was found hanging in his hostel room late on Friday night, the latest in a string of similar deaths at premier institutes that have been blamed on high stress and mounting depression. Sources said Nipin N, a fourth-year student of Aerospace Engineering, allegedly killed himself because of depression. He hailed from Kerala. (HT)

No sale of books, uniforms in schools: CBSE. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has asked its affiliated schools across the country to shut down shops selling textbooks, stationery, schoolbags, uniforms, shoes and similar articles within their premises. The board asked schools on Thursday to strictly comply with its affiliation byelaws and "not indulge in commercial activities". This includes sales through "selected vendors". (TOI)

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has served notices to DPS Mathura Road and DPS RK Puram for a number of violations, including the re-appointment or extension of their principals. The board has also asked DPS Mathura Road why its permanent affiliation should not be withdrawn. (HT)

CBSE issued a notice to these 13 schools: Here's why. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in a fresh notice has issued a show cause notice to few of its affiliated schools on the official website, the link for which is cbse.nic.in According to CBSE sources, more schools are likely to be served notice for violations of various affiliation rules of the Board. Moreover, the list includes school from Karnataka to Rajasthan, from Madhya Pradesh to Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. (India Today)

At least 200 Kendriya Vidyalayas and 125 Navodaya Vidyalayas across the country have no principals, as per a report submitted to the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD). JEE Main 2017: Answer keys to be released Today (April 18). The Joint Entrance Examination Mains (JEE-Mains) unit of CBSE will release the answer keys of JEE Main 2017 Paper 1 exam (both online and offline) on its official website on Tuesday. Candidates can check the answer keys after they are uploaded and raise their objections until April 22 (11.59pm). (HT)

IIT Kharagpur to teach Vastu Shastra to architecture students. Articheture Students at IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) Kharagpur will soon be studying Vastu Shastra with the varsity introducing the course shortly. The classes are expected to commence from August. It will be introduced to undergraduate students as part of courses on basic design and history of architecture. (India Today)

IITs to add 20% seats to get in more women. THE INDIAN Institutes of Technology (IITs) have decided to introduce a supernumerary quota for women from 2018 to improve the gender composition of their classrooms. The decision to introduce 20 per cent additional seats, exclusively for women, was taken at a meeting of the Joint Admission Board (JAB) of the IITs on Saturday afternoon. (Indian Express)
