JEE main 2017: Cut off expected at 105, says experts. JEE Main 2017 answer keys will be displayed from April 18-22. The cut off for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) 2017 is expected to be around 105 this year, according to experts. The exam which was held on April 2, 2017 was considered to be of moderate difficulty, despite the tricky mathematics portion. (Indian Express)

CBSE to do away with grace marks for class 12 board exams: HRD to take decision soon. The HRD Ministry has also called a meeting of all state school boards on April 24 in order to build consensus on a proposal to scrap the policy of 'marks moderation' or 'grace marks'. According to media reports, the move comes after CBSE requested MHRD to develop a consensus on completely removing the marks moderation policy so that the process of getting admissions gets easier. CBSE textbook says ''36-24-36'' perfect female figure! HRD minister remarks the book as sexist. On Tuesday, social media went viral with an image of physical education class 12 textbook claiming '36'-'24'-'36' is the best figure for females. The Union Minister of Human Resource Development, Prakash Javadekar has criticised the remark and said the text is non-defendable and unacceptable. As reported by PTI, the minister said, "I condemn the remarks in the book as sexist. The text is non-defendable and unacceptable. We have taken serious note of it. I have instructed the officers to take appropriate action in this regard," Javadekar told reporters. (India Today)

A report in the News Nation claims that the CBSE board might declare Class 10 exam results before May 20 and that of Class 12 in the last week of the month. (Zee News)

NEET: Supreme Court directs Centre to include Urdu from 2018 onwards. The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the Centre to include Urdu in National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) from next session 2018-19. Since the exam is scheduled to be held in May 7, therefore Urdu will not be included this year. The Students Islamic Organisation (SIO) had filed a plea requesting the court for inclusion of Urdu as a medium in which students can attempt NEET 2017. (Indian Express)

School fees : Survey shows up to 20% hike this year; parents seek correction. More than half of all parents surveyed in a countrywide study have said that the school fees of their children were hiked between 11 and 20% this year, highlighting the mounting cost of quality education in India. A study by localcircles.com -- an online neighbourhood network -- comprising 9,000 parents and grandparents reported 54% people as saying that school increased fees by between 11% and 20%. (HT)

Engineering colleges flouting student-faculty ratio to face action: AICTE. Engineering colleges not maintaining the prescribed student-faculty ratio will be liable for action, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has said. Non-adherence to pay scales and qualification of teachers will also be considered violation of norms leading to the suspension of admission process or reduction in intake in technical institutions. NAAC asked to rework accreditation process for higher education institutes. To do away with "corruption" and subjectivity in assessment and grading of higher education institutions, the ministry of human resource development has asked for a complete overhaul of the accreditation process by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) from July 2017. Delhi University to start 10 new undergraduate courses. The University of Delhi is all set to introduce 10 new honours courses under its School of Opening Learning (SOL) initiative. The courses will include undergraduate as well as vocational courses for the upcoming academic session. Courses like Bachelor of Vocation in human resource management are being introduced. NEET in Urdu: Govt says not biased against Muslims. The Centre has refuted the allegations before the Supreme Court that it left Urdu as a medium for the common entrance test for admission to MBBS courses (NEET) because of its alleged "prejudice and bias" against Muslims and said that there was no consideration of "religion or communal issues" while taking the decision. To bury or burn? CBSE left red-faced after 'communal' question in Class XII Biology paper. An environment-related question of CBSE Class XII Biology examination that asked students to answer why they should promote “burying” and not burning” to protect air quality created uproar over social media when people connected it with religious undertones. The question read: “Public all over India is very much concerned about the deteriorating air quality in large parts of North India. Alarmed by this, the Resident’s Welfare Association of your locality organised an awareness programme called “bury not burn”. They invited you, being a biology student. How would you justify your arguments that promote burying and not burning?” (DNA)

MCI directs cancellation of 500 admissions in Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu medical colleges. The Medical Council of India (MCI) has directed some private colleges in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu to cancel admissions of around 500 students who had allegedly not appeared for NEET exam last year. According to a senior MCI official, these are suspected to be backdoor admissions allegedly done after receiving capitation fees as these states were among those who had opted for NEET. (Zee News)

Schools in the national capital will not admit any student who has an association with any “banned” organisation, Delhi Government has said. “The guideline is majorly for students from Class 6 to 12, especially those coming from disturbed areas where certain banned groups operate,” a senior DoE official said. Maths section tricky and lengthy in JEE (Main), aspirants say. Most of the engineering aspirants who appeared for JEE (Main) on Sunday found the mathematics section to be tricky and lengthy. Many students also pointed out that the difficulty level of the paper was slightly higher than last year. Supreme Court stays CBSE’s decision to fix upper age limit of 25 years for NEET. All medical aspiring students can now appear for NEET this year irrespective of their age, as the Supreme Court on Friday stayed CBSE's decision to fix an upper age limit of 25 years for taking the entrance examination for MBBS course. The court directed the CBSE to allow students to apply for the examination and asked it to open a window till April 5 for them to fill up the form. The last date for filling up the form had expired on March 1 and entrance test is scheduled for May 7.(TOI)

ITI graduates to get Class 10, 12 equivalent certificates. In a major relief to Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs), the government proposes to set up a separate board that will conduct exams and award certificates at par with those given to students clearing class 10 and 12 examinations from Boards like CBSE. The Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry has already accepted the proposal. This move is likely to benefit over two million students graduating from over 13,000 ITIs every year.(Indian Express)

Only 16 per cent candidates cleared GATE 2017 exam. The results of the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2017 were declared on March 26. In a recent report, GATE organising chairman GJ Chakrapani said that only 16 per cent of the candidates have been qualified in GATE 2017. The data is calculated to 16 per cent which is similar to last year (15 per cent) A total of 1,29,149 candidates have qualified the exam.(India Today)

IIT Roorkee declares GATE 2017 results, check at iitr.ac.in. Students awaiting results of Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2017, can finally heave a sigh of relief. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee has declared GATE 2017 results one day in advance and the results are now available on their official website - ​appsgate.iitr.ac.in. The results were earlier scheduled to be declared on March 27 by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). The final score card for GATE 2017 will be available for download till May 5, 2017. (DNA)

CBSE Board exams and more: Too many decisions too quickly? Is the recent storm of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) circulars leaving schools and parents confused? The answer could be yes given the Board’s March 16 advisory to school heads to “familiarise themselves with the content (of its circulars) in the light of the confusion created by some of the schools with regard to the recent circulars issued by CBSE”. Medical aspirants should gear up as the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Friday announced the date of the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET) for admission to MBBS/BDS courses. The test will be conducted on May 7 in 103 cities across the nation. There is a significant rise in the number of candidates appearing for NEET this time. “41.42% more candidates have registered for NEET this year. Jawaharlal Nehru University released its prospectus on Tuesday suggesting seat cuts in the MPhil/PhD programmes across different courses in line with the University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines after the Delhi high court last week dismissed as infructuous the plea by some students challenging JNU admission policy for these courses. UGC directs varsities to include photograph, Aadhar in degrees. The UGC has directed all universities and educational institutions to introduce identification mechanisms like student’s photograph and Aadhar number besides security features in degrees and certificates awarded by them. “Having security features in the marksheets and certificates issued by varsities are useful for verification and curbing duplication. At the same time, they help in introducing uniformity and transparency within and across the system of higher education in the country,” UGC Secretary, JS Sandhu said in a communication to varsities. CBSE unveils new exam format for classes VI to IX. The Central Board of Secondary Education has formally junked the continuous and comprehensive evaluation (CCE) scheme for classes VI to IX, being followed in affiliated schools since 2009. Replacing it from the coming academic year (2017-18) is a new format — 'uniform system of assessment, examination and report card' — that aims at standardizing teaching and evaluation across schools. CBSE mandates 2-semester system from Class 6 to prepare students for board exams. Schools affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will now have to follow a uniform assessment scheme that stipulates a two-semester system – complete with half-yearly and annual examinations – from Class 6 onwards. “To make students more confident about facing the Class 10 board examinations when they join the upper-primary stage in Class 6, we have decided to implement a uniform system of assessment, examination pattern and report cards...” said CBSE chairman RK Chaturvedi. CBSE seeks QCI help for accreditation framework. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has approached the Quality Council of India (QCI) to develop an accreditation framework for its affiliated schools. QCI is an autonomous body of the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion set up to establish and operate the national accreditation structure. According to sources, the board has asked QCI to prepare an approach paper to grade CBSE schools. (Indian Express)

NTS to hold most of CBSE entrance tests from 2018. National Testing Service (NTS) will conduct majority of tests conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education from 2018. Once the Cabinet's nod is given, the agency will start with the National Entrance Examination for Technical Institution (NEETI) for admission to engineering courses from January 2018. According to sources, entrance tests for courses in higher education and other professional tests conducted by the CBSE will come under the NTS fold making it the country's largest exam conducting body. 23 universities, 279 technical institutes in India are fake – Delhi, UP lead the pack. The University Grants Commission (UGC) and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has prepared a list of fake universities functioning in India. Out of the 23 fake universities operating in India without UGC permit, Uttar Pradesh has nine unrecognised universities and Delhi has seven. Delhi also has the highest number of fake colleges (66) offering engineering and other technical courses. Across India, there are 279 such technical institutes (primarily in Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, West Bengal, Maharasthra) which do not have authority to confer degrees. (Zee News)

Asia’s best universities: IIT Bombay ranked 42nd, Bengaluru’s IISc in top 50. Times Higher Education (THE), which released its Asia University Rankings 2017 on Wednesday, listed 33 Indian universities in the top 300. Eight established and 17 new entrants made it to the top 100 with Bengaluru’s Indian Institute of Science (IISc) at 27. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay was ranked 42 and Chennai-based private institute Veltech University was a joint 43 in the top 50. (HT)

Government gives nod to IIIT Bill. THE CABINET on Wednesday approved the IIIT Bill to grant statutory powers to the 15 Indian Institutes of Information Technology set up in public private partnership mode. Once passed by Parliament, the proposed law will empower the institutions to grant degrees to their students. “This will entitle them to use the nomenclature of Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) or Master of Technology (M.Tech) or Ph.D degree as issued by a University or Institution of National Importance,” stated the press note issued by the Cabinet Secretariat. (Indian Express)
