A message of peace from Pakistan: 11-year-old girl writes to PM Modi. As BJP won a landslide victory in UP polls, an 11-year-old girl from Pakistan lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi through a letter. Aqeedat Naveed penned down a two page letter congratulating PM Modi and urging him to take steps in maintaining peace and friendship between two countries. "Both countries should resolve that they will not buy guns, but will provide free medicines to hundreds of thousands of ailing people of both the nations," read the girl's letter dated March 13. AICTE approves single entrance test for engineering courses from next year. Admission to all engineering colleges across the country will be done through a single entrance examination from next year with the AICTE approving a regulation in this regard, sources said. The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) on Tuesday approved a comprehensive package, including the single national test, for improving engineering education. (HT)

Admit cards for JEE (Main) 2017 to be available on jeemain.nic.in from 14th March onwards. Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) said in a statement - "The Admit Cards for JEE (Main) – 2017 will be available on the website from 14th March 2017 (A/N) onwards." CBSE conducts the JEE exams for admission to undergraduate engineering programmes in NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded technical institutions and so on. The 5th joint entrance examination (Main) 2017 will be conducted on April 2 - pen and paper mode. (Zee News)

CBSE Class 10 Board Exam: Assessment scheme revised. In a bid to bring about changes in the school curriculum, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced to remodel assessment scheme of Class 10 Board examination. According to reports, the change in assessment would apply for schools offering vocational subject as compulsory subject under National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF) scheme. Meanwhile, the new assessment scheme would be applicable from commencing academic session 2017-18. (India Today)

29% women do not pursue MBA Programme due to financial constraints, finds GMAC. On the academic floor, the MBA programme has always been supreme, attracting more men than women. But little is known about the skewed sex ratio in this course that allows learners a chance to pick the crucial tools of management. A white paper from US-based Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), which conducts GMAT, has revealed that one in every three women around the world does not choose MBA due to financial constraints. Govt keen on more English schools. Soon there will be more opportunities for children in remote and rural areas to get education in English medium, as the central government is keen on improving English and Science education in the country. A Group of Secretaries looking into the roadmap for education and social development in the country has recommended to the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) that there should be at least one English medium school in every block across the country, and that Science education should be available everywhere within a radius of 5 km. NEET 2017: State level common counselling introduced for UG, PG medical aspirants. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has announced that common counselling will be provided at the state level for admission into undergraduate and postgraduate medical courses. According to a press release by the ministry, this has been done to promote transparency in the admission process. The ministry had issued an advisory on August 9, 2016, soon after the first National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), to conduct common counselling for admission to MBBS courses. The University Grants Commission (UGC) had directed all universities to be a part of the counselling. (Indian Express)

CBSE makes six subjects mandatory for Class X board exams. Students appearing for Class X board exams from next year will have to study six subjects instead of five with the CBSE remodelling its assessment scheme. From the 2017-18 academic year, it will be compulsory to study a vocational subject. Students will have 13 options to choose from for the sixth subject -- Dynamics of Retailing, Information Technology, Security, Automobile Technology, Introduction to Financial Market, Introduction to Tourism, Beauty and Wellness, Basic Agriculture, Food Production, Front Office Operations, Banking and Insurance, Marketing and Sales, and Health Care Services. NEET: Centre open to conducting exam in Urdu from next academic year. The Centre on Friday told the Supreme Court that it was open to the suggestion of conducting NEET, a single window entrance test for admissions for MBBS and BDS courses, in Urdu medium also from next academic year. The central government, represented by Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar, however, told the bench comprising Justices Kurian Joseph and R Banumathi that it was not feasible to introduce Urdu as one of the mediums for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) from the current academic year. 11 universities have been identified as under performers including AMU, Allahabad University. Prestigious varsities such as Aligarh Muslim University and Allahabad University have been identified as "non-performers" by the HRD Ministry. "At least 11 universities have been identified as under performers including AMU, Allahabad University, Pondicherry University, Central University of Jammu, Jharkhand and Rajasthan and BR Ambedkar University, Lucknow," a senior HRD Ministry official said. Other defaulter universities identified by the Ministry officials include Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University, Dr Hari Singh Gour University, Tripura University and Mahatma Gandhi Antarashtriya Hindi Vishwavidyalaya. Medical colleges to come under CCTV surveillance, biometric attendance: MCI. To keep a constant check on the standards of medical education, the Medical Council of India (MCI) with the approval of Central Government has recently decided to include few surveillance equipment. According to reports, the MCI will install biometric fingerprint attendance machine and close circuit television (CCTV) in all medical colleges. This announcement was made by the Minister of State (Health and Family Welfare) Faggan Singh Kulaste dispensed this information on Friday in Lok Sabha. (India Today)

Confusion over the three-language formula has parents in a fix, with unverified circulars being floated and schools jumping the gun to implement a policy that is still at the stage of deliberations. The Delhi Public School, Mathura Road, issued a circular saying that Class VI students will not be able to continue studying foreign languages under the new three-language formula. It also said that the school was offering Sanskrit and Urdu as the two Indian languages. The school was later forced to withdraw the circular. (Indian Express)

Delhi Budget: AAP govt allocated Rs 11,300 crore for education. With a major thrust on improving health, water distribution, transport, health and education infrastructure, the AAP government in its Rs 48,000 crore budget has allocated Rs 11,300 crore for education, Rs 5,736 crore for health and Rs 5,506 crore for transport. The total expenditure of Rs 11,300 crore on education has been proposed which includes a revenue budget of Rs 10,186 crore and capital budget of Rs 1,114 crore which is 24 per cent of total budget estimates. While 8,86,506 candidates have registered for the Class 10 examination, 15.73% more than last year’s figure, a total of 10,98,981 students have enrolled for Class 12 exams, a 2.82% increase from the preceding year’s number. Architecture education moving under Urban Development Ministry from HRD. The NDA government is set to take architecture education out of the Human Resources Development (HRD) Ministry’s purview and allocate it to the Urban Development Ministry, sources have told The Indian Express. The decision was taken even though the HRD Ministry had opposed the proposal in a meeting held at the Cabinet Secretariat last month. The then higher education secretary V S Oberoi, who retired on February 28, had attended the discussion. (Indian express)

500 teachers quit over Rajasthan government's decision: SMS Medical College Jaipur. After the Rajasthan government passed out the order to make medical officers equivalent to medical teachers, on Wednesday, over 500 teachers at Jaipur's Sawai Man Singh Medical College resigned from their posts after protesting for the same. According to the faculty members associated with the institute, the government's March 7 order will introduce a lateral entry into the teaching line and accused that it has been misleading people by using the word equivalent. NCERT receives order of 5 million books from CBSE schools. After the HRD Ministry made it mandatory for schools to possess textbooks published by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), rise in the order of books have been observed. The deadline was extended to February 28 and over 2,200 private schools have placed orders for nearly 5.5 million books. As per a TOI report, a third window might be allowed by the NCERT in order to receive more orders. It is also expected that the demand may cross 10 million at the start of the new academic session. CBSE schools will have to declare complete fee structure on website. Schools might be required to disclose all the heads under which they collect student fees such as tuition, computer classes, transport, and medical on their website. Moreover, they will also have to make parents part of the management committee so that they remain aware of any proposed fee hike. These are part of revised affiliation bylaws that have been drafted by the Central Board of Central Education (CBSE), which runs more than 18,000 schools across the country, a source said. Mumbai University removes late night curfew for female students in campus hostels. Starting Wednesday, Mumbai University has decided to remove the rules prohibiting female students from staying out late night away from their hostel. According to a report in Hindustan Times, university chancellor, Sanjay Deshmukh, sent out a letter to the students announcing that from now on the curfew rules will be same for boys and girls. In a first, IISc makes it to top 10 global varsities ranking. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore has become the first Indian educational institution to make it to the top 10 of a global ranking for universities. IISc has been ranked eighth in the Times Higher Education or THE Rankings, 2017 in the "best small universities" category, joining the elite list that includes California Institute of Technology (Caltech) from the US, Ecole Normale Superieure from France and Pohang University of Science and Technology, South Korea. With the Maharashtra state board grappling with paper leaks over WhatsApp for the past three years, there is an urgent need to plug these leaks. The HSC secretarial practice paper was leaked on social media minutes before the exam began on Saturday. This is the second paper to be leaked during the ongoing board exams, and the fourth in the past three years. Facing similar problems months ago, MU came up with a hi-tech model to improve security for the March-April exams. Couldn't complete degree within time? DU not to give any chance. The Delhi University has decided to do away with the "special chance" provision for students who could not complete their degrees within stipulated time. The "special chance" provision allowed students who left their studies midway to appear for pending exams even years later if they could justify their absence. The Executive Council (EC), the supreme decision-making body of the university, last week decided to scrap the provision saying the students must complete their degrees on time. (Zee News)

SC stays BCI's notification on age limit for law courses. On Friday, the Supreme Court has stayed an order issued by the Bar Council of India (BCI) fixing an age limit of 45 years for three-year LLB degree courses and 22 years for five-year law courses. A bench of Justices SA Bobde and L Nageswara Rao showed dissatisfaction towards the BCI notification putting a cap on age limit to 22 years for the five-year course and 45 years for the three-year course. SC notice to Centre, CBSE for inclusion of Urdu in NEET. A plea suggesting making Urdu as a medium for NEET 2017, a common entrance test for admissions in MBBS and BDS courses across the country, on Friday led the Supreme Court to seek responses from the Centre and Medical Council of India (MCI). Besides the Centre and MCI, the court also issued notices to Dental Council of India (DCI) and Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and fixed the plea for further hearing on March 10. (TOI)

MBBS students thrown out of colleges are ‘depressed, don’t have strength to write NEET again’. The 519 students who qualified the tough National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) entrance test to get into medical colleges – only to get thrown out by the Medical Council of India (MCI) – say they are depressed and see no way out of their predicament. Qualifying NEET to get into another medical college next year is impossible as they have “no strength left to study for the exams again,” they say. (HT)

Government approves record 4000 PG medical seats for 2017-18 session. The government has approved a record number of over 4,000 PG medical seats in various medical colleges and hospitals for the academic session 2017-18. Of the total, 2,046 seats will be added to medical colleges. With this, the total number of available PG medical seats has increased to 35,117. Looking at the need to increase PG seats in clinical subjects, the government had decided to amend the teacher-student ratio for these subjects in government medical colleges. This change alone has resulted in the creation of 1,137 extra seats in 71 colleges. (TOI)

The staff association of the college has decided that teachers will resign from the administrative positions they are holding on non-remunerative basis, said a teacher. Regarding the college governing body's decision to seek autonomy status, a section of St Stephen's teachers has threatened to resign their administrative posts opposing the institute's move. Guest teachers in Delhi government schools to get salary hike. Guest teachers in government schools of Delhi have a reason to rejoice now as Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia made an announcement regarding the salary hike today. He told the media that approval has been given by Lt Governor Anil Baijal to increase the salaries of the 17,000 'guest teachers' in all three categories ie PGT, TGT and assistant teachers. The monthly salaries would go up from Rs 21,000 to Rs 34,000, from Rs 18,000 to Rs 33,000, and from Rs 16,000 to Rs 32,000, Sisodia said. The assistant teacher's salary would be increased from Rs 16,000 to Rs 32,000 a month. "Now 'guest teachers' will be able to lead a dignified life," he said. "It is a move towards providing quality education'', he added. (TOI)

Centre to set up five educational institutions for minorities: Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi. Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Wednesday said the Centre will establish five world-class institutions to provide better education in technical, medical, ayurveda and unani fields to students belonging to the minority communities. "A high-level committee working to chalk out a framework for these institutions will soon submit its report (in this regard)," the Minister of State for Minority Affairs said. The minister was addressing a national seminar of Minority Community Teachers Association at the India Islamic Cultural Centre here. (Zee News)

Tamil Nadu strengthen its voice against NEET. Tamil Nadu is opposing NEET and recently, the State Assembly adopted two bills facilitating continuation of the present system of admitting students to medical colleges on the basis of 12th standard marks. Alleging that the NEET examination will hurt the interest of students, a man today protested in front of the collectorate office. Kolanjiyappan, who claimed to be a teacher in a private school, got into the handstand position and rested his legs against a wall and remained in that posture for sometime at the collectorate premises. Medical shocker: 500 MBBS students lose seats in 17 colleges. Medical education regulator Medical Council of India (MCI) has cancelled the admission of 519 MBBS students enrolled in 17 colleges and attending classes for last three months. MCI has alleged that the colleges admitted students directly, violating a Supreme Court order of September 28, 2016, directing the state government to hold centralised counselling and allot colleges to students based on their performance in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). “While scrutinising the admissions process, we found that 17 colleges in three states have given direct admission to 519 students in violation of the SC order,” a senior MCI official said in response to an RTI application filed by this correspondent. UK economy needs Indian students to subsidise education costs: Arun Jaitley. The Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley, on Monday highlighted the importance of Indian students in the UK economy. He said that having Indians study in the England has resulted in the subsidisation of education costs in their country. “We already have a reality where the quantum of students coming into the UK is declining and other jurisdictions are available. The UK also is a part of the competitive market in that area,” Jaitley said on a five-day visit to the UK to attend a special reception by Queen Elizabeth II at the Bukhingham Palace for the launch of the UK-India Year of Culture. Now, CBSE will review books of private publishers in affiliated schools. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Monday announced that it will review the textbooks of private publishers taught in its affiliated schools. According to PTI reports, the board has made this statement after jointly consulting with the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) and the the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD). Earlier this month, the board also made it mandatory for all affiliated schools to follow the NCERT curriculum from the commencing academic session 2017-18. The move was prompted keeping in mind that NCERT syllabus is more oriented towards several national entrance examinations for medical, engineering and other competitive examinations. (India Today)

Lucknow boy wins Golden Beaver Award for documentary on psychopaths. A 17-year-old boy from Lucknow has won the Golden Beaver Award for his documentary on psychopaths at the recently concluded 7th National Science Film Festival that was held in Kolkata. Last year, Aditya won the same award for his documentary ‘Ants: A Tiny Creature’. “It is a thrilling experience to win an award for two years in a row,” Aditya, a class 12 student of Manipal Public School, said. He received Rs 50,000 as prize money as part of the award in category D for films made by school students. (HT)

Delhi government's appeal on nursery admissions dismissed. The Delhi High Court on Monday dismissed a Delhi government's appeal challenging a single-judge order that stayed its notification compelling 298 private schools built on public land to admit only neighbourhood nursery students. A division bench of Chief Justice G. Rohini and Justice Sangita Dhingra Sehgal upheld the judge's February 14 order which had said the Delhi government's January 7 notification was "arbitrary and discriminatory". The Aam Aadmi Party government had approached the division bench saying the order was "wrong and erroneous". (Zee News)

St Stephen’s College to again ask Delhi University for autonomy,despite opposition. The governing body of St Stephen’s College’s has decided in principle to apply for autonomy, despite the disagreement by teacher representatives at the meeting on Saturday. As the governing body met on Saturday, students and members of Teachers’ Association (DUTA) also protested outside the venue against the proposal. St Stephen’s, along with a few other Delhi University (DU) colleges, is applying for autonomy as per the guidelines of the University Grants Commission (UGC). Among other colleges that may apply are Shri Ram College for Commerce (SRCC), Hindu College, Sri Venkateswara College and Hansraj College. (HT)

Depute guards, install CCTVs, GPS in buses: CBSE issues fresh guidelines for schools. All schools affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will now have to depute guards on school buses and fit the vehicles with closed circuit television cameras (CCTVs), GPS systems, sirens and grilles on windows. Additionally, such school buses would need to have one “well-trained lady attendant” and, if possible, a parent overseeing the driver and conductor. (HT)

CBSE-affiliated private schools will have to put up information about books prescribed by them on their websites to enhance transparency, allowing parents and others to flag objectionable content, if found. To ensure schools take responsibility of the content being taught, the board is mulling asking the school principal and the manager to certify that they have read the content of the books prescribed. UPSC Civil Services exam 2017: Notification released, check eligibility and exam pattern here. The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has released the notification of the Civil Services preliminary examination 2017 on February 22. As per the official UPSC calendar, the candidates have to submit the application form by March 17. The prelims will be held on June 18 while the main exam is scheduled for October 10. The Civil Services examination is conducted by the UPSC to select candidates to fill administrative positions in different All-India Services and central civil services including IAS, IPS, IFS, IRS, and IRTS. Law colleges mushroom, but concern over quality of advocates. It could be easier to get permission to start a law college in India than to get a law degree. A list of law colleges across the country prepared by the Bar Council of India shows that UP has the largest number of 350 law colleges, and one of its little known universities, Shri Chatrapati Shahuji Maharaj University in Kanpur, has 88 colleges affiliated to it awarding law degrees. Of these 88 colleges, 44 were given permission in just two years between 2014 and 2016 to impart legal education. Jammu & Kashmir Class 10 Exams 2017: Paper cancelled due to mass cheating. Amidst complaints of mass cheating at a Higher Secondary School Haran Soibugh in Jammu's Budgam district, the board cancelled the exam on Tuesday. Receiving complaints, Education Minister Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari directed the authorities to probe the matter. As per the report, the examinations have been cancelled in five exam centres in Soibugh area. The JKBOSE class 10 exams for the Jammu province (summer zone) will be conducted from March 2 to March 17. Earlier, the results of class 10 and 12 exams of Jammu zone was declared in the month of January. (India Today)

PISA Tests: India to take part in global teen learning test in 2021. The year 2021 will mark the end of India’s decade-long boycott of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). PISA — introduced by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation Development (OECD) — tests the learning levels of 15-year-olds in reading, mathematics and science. The test is carried out every three years. India boycotted PISA in 2012 and 2015 on account of its dismal performance in 2009. However, the HRD Ministry, under Prakash Javadekar, has decided that the country will participate in 2021 and the government will apply for the same next year, said sources. (Indian Express)

Chandigarh moves to stop private schools from increasing fees beyond 8 per cent yearly. Chandigarh Administration has decided to implement the Punjab Regulation of Fee of Unaided Educational Institutions Act, which puts a cap on private schools from increasing fees by more than eight percent annually. Schools can be fined for not meeting the provisions of the Act. Following approval accorded by UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore, the file has been moved to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) for clearance. The Home Ministry would refer the issue to the Ministry for Human Resource Development (HRD) and after taking its consent, the UT administration would be asked to issue the relevant notification to implement the Act. Mamata Banerjee's Singur movement gets seven pages in Bengal Class 8 History textbook. After the Bengal government announced its plan to introduce the iconic Singur movement in the history syllabus of schools run by it, a new chapter entitled 'Otit O Oitijhho' (Past and Heritage), has been added to the revised edition of class 8 history textbooks. On one hand, complete seven pages of the entire book have been solely dedicated to the Singur movement but other important movements such as Telangana, the Narmada Bachao and Silent Valley movements are concluding in only three to five pages. School accreditation: 18,225 schools complete the process; Maharashtra tops the list. At 18,225, Maharashtra has recorded the largest number of schools in India to have completed its self-assessments. This is the first stage of the new accreditation system Shaala Siddhi (SS)-2016 that has been adopted by all the states. But, of these, only 25% to 30% of schools have scored more than 90% and secured an A grade in the evaluation. Shaala Siddhi was introduced last year to help students, parents and other stakeholders gauge the quality of a school through their assessment grades, much like the National Accreditation and Assessment Council (NAAC) for institutes of higher education. World-class institutions: HRD may dilute UGC’s funding powers. The University Grants Commission (UGC) is expected to approve the regulations for setting up of 20 world-class institutions at its meeting scheduled on February 22, said sources. If approved, the regulation — titled ‘ UGC (Institutions of Eminence Deemed to be Universities) Regulation 2017 — will be the first move in the direction of pruning the Commission’s authority. The NDA-II government is planning to restructure UGC, which could include dilution of some of its existing powers and greater autonomy for recognised institutions. (Indian Express)

While a number of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) schools in the city use textbooks by various publishers for Classes I to VIII, a circular issued by the board, a few days ago, has put many of them in a dilemma. Possessing Aadhaar card to obtain scholarships is now mandatory, J&K exempted. The HRD Ministryhas announced that holding an Aadhaar card will be mandatory for college and university students applying to avail benefits under the Central Sector Scholarship Scheme and will have to furnish proof of possessing the same. In a notification, the ministry said that those who do not have the card and are receiving these scholarships will be required to apply for enrollment by June 30 this year. This move is expected to bring in transparency and enable beneficiaries to get their entitlements directly in a convenient and seamless manner. According to PTI, making Aadhar mandatory removes the compulsion to submit multiple documents. (India Today)

Delhi govt to launch mobile app for school management bodies. The Delhi government will soon launch a mobile application to assist the members of school management committees (SMCs) in their functioning. The SMCs have 16 members each comprising a teacher, a principal, 12 parents, an MLA and a social activist. "The SMC app will not only provide a virtual platform to the management bodies to connect with the members and be updated on issues pertaining to the functioning of the schools but also act as a record maintenance tool," a Delhi government official said. NEET 2017: Lower cut-off score in plan to fill up vacant seats, including in non-clinical courses. Andhra Pradesh Health Minister Kamineni Srinivas today met Union Health Minister J P Nadda to urge for lower cut-off score in the NEET exam to facilitate the qualification of more students from the state. At a meeting, Srinivas said the reduction in the cut-off marks would help more students qualify for courses under the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test. "The Union minister accepted my request in principle and assured a positive outcome. The move would help fill up vacant seats, including in non-clinical courses, in government colleges," Srinivas said. (India Today)

Delhi govt launches diploma in pre-school education. The Delhi government has launched a diploma course in pre-school education with an aim to build skilled staff for the proposed 3,000 early childhood education centres in the national capital. The course would be started at nine District Institutes of Education and Training (DIET), from the next academic session, with 450 seats in the first year. The government had earlier announced the setting up of an Early Childhood Education Development (ECED) program with 3000 centres across Delhi. (Zee News)

Kerala schools to get hi-tech upgrades with Rs 533 crore project. IT@School, a Kerala government initiative to impart IT education in schools, has submitted Rs 533 crore budget-worth project report to the state government for making all the eight to twelve school classes in the state hi-tech. The detailed project report, which comprises upgradation plan of 45000 classrooms and IT labs in 4775 schools at a total budget of Rs 553 Crores, was submitted to Usha Titus, Secretary, General Education Department, by Anvar Sadath K, Executive Director, IT@School Project, a release said in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday. Students of the Lucknow University will soon get to assess their teachers as the officials are set to come up with a format allowing them to evaluate their classroom experience. The university will begin the process of obtaining the feedback of students about the faculty. The move is seen as an attempt to improve the quality of education. “The idea is to find out what students think about the way they are being taught. NEET 2017: DMK MP requests PM Modi to help exempt Tamil Nadu students from the exam. Tamil Nadu passed the legislation exempting its students from taking NEET for admission into medical and dental colleges, and instead get admissions based on marks obtained in class 12 board examination. "The exam is fast approaching and is scheduled on May 7 and applications for it would close on March 1. I requested the PM to look into the issue and offer a permanent solution for large number of students who would be affected because of it," Siva said after meeting PM Modi. Siva also submitted a letter to PM Modi on behalf of his party working president and Leader of Opposition in Tamil Nadu Assembly M K Stalin. (India Today)

Bihar Intermediate Exam: 360 students expelled for cheating. For using unfair means in the Intermediate examination, a total of 360 examinees, many of them girls, were expelled across the state on Thursday, the third day of the intermediate examination. Besides, five persons in Jehanabad, Nalanda, Gaya and Darbhanga districts were arrested for allegedly impersonating as candidates, a statement issued by the Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) that conducts the examination said here. Delhi High Court seeks UPSC response on vacant teachers posts. The Delhi High Court has asked Union Public Service Commission response over the massive shortage of teaching staff, including principals, in schools run by Delhi government and the MCDs. Justice Manmohan made UPSC a party as it is responsible for recruitment of principals. Apart from the commission, the court also sought replies from the Municipal Corporations of Delhi (MCDs) and the Directorate of Education (DoE) regarding the number of vacancies in each school in the category of Principal, Vice-Principal, Post Graduate Teacher (PGT), Trained Graduate Teacher (TGT), Special Educators and Assistant Teachers. Mumbai: 25 per cent seats reserved for EWS in school admissions. As the admission for the economically weaker sections began in Mumbai on February 9, 2017, over 3,000 applications have been received so far. Under the Right to Education (RTE) Act, 25 per cent seats are reserved for the economically weaker sections. Withstanding the technical glitches in the online application process which had deterred the admission process, the education department of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to conduct the first round of seat allocation on February 28. CBSE affiliated schools will have to use National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) textbooks from the 2017-18 academic session. Fresh norms to be issued for CBSE schools to reduce school bag burden. At an event organised by the CBSE, Union Minister Prakash Javadekar said that in order to reduce the burden of school bags on students, the HRD ministry is working on fresh norms for CBSE schools. "I am going to reduce the weight of school bags... Carrying heavy bags is not necessary. It will definitely happen. We are preparing norms for CBSE schools that bundles of books and notebooks do not have to be needlessly carried," he said. (India Today)
