Older IITs to focus on research, PG studies, newer ones to take care of UG. After expressing their inability to increase the number of seats at the undergraduate level, the older Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are now focusing to develop themselves at the postgraduate level by increasing number of PhD seats from the upcoming session. The IITs have recently conveyed this to the ministry. This is also aimed at increasing the research output of these institutions that would help in improving their rankings globally. (DNA)

NEET super specialty exam to be held on June 10, 2017. The Health Ministry on Wednesday said that National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for super specialty courses will be held in various cities on June 10, 2017. "The examination being conducted by the National Board of Examinations, shall be held as a computer-based test and shall comprise of 200 multiple choice questions from the MD/MS curriculum followed at medical colleges in India duly prescribed /adopted by Medical Council of India with prior approval of the Health Ministry," said the statement. College principals to face new reappointment test. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has a new rule for reappointment of principals in colleges. According to the rule, college principals can be reappointed for a second tenure by the management only after they go through a selection process conducted by an external peer review committee.(DNA)

More firms but fewer offers at IITs this year. Although more companies visited IIT campuses this year for Phase I of the recruitment process, the number of offers per company appear to be fewer than in the previous year. At IIT-Bombay, the number of students picked by leading finance and consulting firms has reduced; it has shrunk from 16 to 13 as in the case with Goldman Sachs or nine to four from consulting firm BCG. Maharashtra govt scraps CET for medical admissions. The Maharashtra government on Monday announced that there won’t be any Common Entrance Test (CET) for medical admissions from 2017. After the confusion over NEET and MH-CET exams this year, the state has now made it clear that starting 2017, admissions to all medical courses will be conducted on the basis of NEET scores only. While the SC had made NEET compulsory only for MBBS and BDS aspirants, Maharashtra government scraped CET altogether. This means that the medical aspirants will no longer have to give separate entrance tests for admissions to different courses." (HT)

UGC amends regulations, college principals to get one more term. The University Grants Commission (UGC) in one of the important decisions has said that a college principal can get one more term after completion of his/her five-year tenure, following the constitution of the external peer review committee. In its notice on November 29, it said, "The term of appointment of the college principal shall be five years with eligibility for re-appointment for one more term, only after a similar selection process, which shall take into account an external peer review, its recommendations, and its outcomes. The framework of the external peer review shall be specified by the UGC." (Times of India)

Assam: Government to give free textbooks to class 9, 10 students. In an aim to increase enrolment in state-funded schools and reduce dropout rate, the government will give free textbooks to class 9 and 10 students from the academic year 2017-18 As part of the scheme, students will get free textbooks within December 25, as every year, new sessions in Assam begin from January 1, said a government release. IITs, NITs have just 50% teaching staff. The most premier technical institutions in the country — Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs) are functioning with only half the number of sanctioned faculty members, government revealed in Lok Sabha on Monday. Over 2,000 faculty positions are vacant in IITs, and over 3,000 in NITs, across the country, against the sanctioned strength of over 5,000 for both, HRD Ministry said, while answering a question on the number of faculty positions vacant in IITs, NITs and Indian Institute of Managements (IIMs). IIM-Ahmedabad to provide training to principals of Delhi government schools. The Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad, will now train principals of schools in Delhi so as to capacitate them to function better as heads of educational institutions. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the institute and the Delhi government for the same. Heads of schools from a total of 1,024 schools, run by the Directorate of Education, Delhi, will benefit from the MoU. (Indian Express)

Govt spent 1.34% of GDP on high education. Government has spent 1.34% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on higher education during 2013-14, Lok Sabha was informed today. As per publication 'Analysis of Budgeted Expenditure on Education - 2015' of the HRD Ministry, public expenditure on higher education as a percentage of GDP for the year 2013-14 was 1.34%, HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar said during Question Hour. During XII five year plan, the plan outlay for the department of higher education was Rs 1,10,700 crore compared with the actual expenditure in XI Plan of Rs 39,646.82 crore. (DNA)

School principals reprimanded for poor results: Madhya Pradesh. The Madhya Pradesh government reprimanded the school principals for poor results. Several school principals from government schools were stopped from one increment following the inspection where the pass percentage of many schools were found below 53.57 per cent. As a result, six school principals was stopped on one increment by the government due to the poor results, lack of faculty and irregularities of students. (India Today)

State of Indian schools a tale of neglect: CJI TS Thakur. Chief Justice of India (CJI) TS Thakur on Saturday rued the fact that despite great progress in the nation over the past 50 years, the state of the schools reflects a tale of neglect. “The plight is not of just one school but of various educational institutions which need to be upgraded with latest equipment, smart classrooms, digital library and labs. Talented teachers need to be employed to ensure maximum growth of the students of the state,” Justice Thakur during a visit to his alma mater, Central Basic Higher Secondary School in Jammu. (DNA)

Indian-origin student sues Oxford University for ‘boring’ teaching. An Indian-origin student has sued the Oxford University for “boring” teaching, saying that he suffered a loss of earnings in his career as a lawyer after he received the second-class degree from the varsity. Faiz Siddiqui studied modern history at Brasenose College at the university and accuses its staff of “negligent” teaching of his specialist subject course on Indian imperial history, which led to him getting a 2:1 back in 2000, the high court in London heard this week. India gains second spot in emerging markets university rankings, IISc in top 15. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has made it to the top 15 universities for the first time this year while India was ranked second in a list of 300 top universities in emerging economies, “making great strides” in the compilation topped by China. In the latest ‘BRICS and Emerging Economies University Rankings 2017’ report released on December 1, China ranked first with 52 universities while India was on the second spot with 27 universities. 'Sonam Gupta Bewafa Hai' leaves impression in IIT exam. The students faced a 11-mark question where the professor asked them to determine the probability that Sonam Gupta is bewafa given that at least one other person 'y' has claimed that she is bewafa. A student from IIT Guwahati, Dipankar Deori posted a picture of the question paper and spoke about how Sonam's bewafa had even sparked his professor's innovation when setting the IIT question paper. Deori wrote, 'When IIT profs too believe about the "bewafa" of Sonam Gupta, students get a question paper like this in the end sem of EE622 exam." (India Today)

Only 17% children in India go to English-medium schools . With around 49 per cent students studying in Hindi-medium schools, the language still continues to be the prime medium of instruction in schools across India. There are only 17 per cent students studying in English-medium schools. Despite unrest, J&K and the Northeastern states have the largest number of English-medium students. (DNA)

ISC exams from Feb 6, ICSE from Feb 27. The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) has announced the timetable for the class XII (ISC) and class X (ICSE) examinations to be held in 2017. The ISC examinations will begin with the Physics paper 2 practical on February 6 and will continue up to April 5. The ICSE exams on the other hand will begin with English paper on February 27 and end on March 31. (Times of India)

Only 177 PhDs in entrepreneurship in last 16 years: Study. Despite government's efforts to promote entrepreneurship, doctoral research on the subject is yet to pick up in Indian universities as only 177 PhDs have been awarded in it compared to 20,271 in social sciences during last 16 years, says a study. As per the study, which covered PhD output across 740 recognised universities in the country, only 66 universities awarded PhDs in entrepreneurship. It also identified "women entrepreneurship" as the most preferred areas of research. (Tmes of India)
