Centre to set up five new universities for minorities. The Centre has decided to set up five new universities for imparting higher education including medical to students belonging to minority communities, Union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi announced here on Thursday. "We want to establish five universities with world class institutions where higher education including medical and skill development will be imparted as part of efforts to empower minorities. (TOI)

Medical students will have to clear exit test for ‘Dr’ tag. Medical students will have to do more than complete a five-and-a-half-year-long medical course to use the 'doctor' title. The draft Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Bill 2016, unveiled by the Union health ministry on Thursday, said they will have to pass the National Exit Test (NEXT). The test is expected to create a level-playing field in medical education, increasingly becoming privatized. (TOI)

IITs to hold joint technology meet for smartest of students to compete. In order to provide a verdant platform for the smartest of students across the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) to compete in various events, the premier institutes has, of late, decided to hold an 'Inter-IIT Tech Meet' every year. It is said that the proposal to hold the meet came after the group of directors entered into a discussion held at IIT-Kanpur in the recent times. "While many of the IITs hold their tech fests, a proposal to hold a joint technology meet was discussed in a meeting of Directors of these institutes held at Kanpur campus earlier this month," sources told PTI. Entrance test likely for B.Com admissions in Delhi University. Delhi University is likely to conduct B.Com admissions through entrance test in the new academic session. Presently, DU holds entrance test for its Post Graduation (PG) and professional courses but admissions to undergraduate courses are made on the basis of Class XII marks. "Hopefully it (entrance) will start for commerce admissions. But we are also exploring possibilities in other subjects," said Dr Manoj Khanna, convenor of Admission Committee of DU. (Zee News)

Private CBSE schools can no longer pick own heads. Private unaided schools affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will no longer be able to appoint principals or heads on their own as the board has empowered itself to monitor such appointments in schools that fall under its ambit. Also, teachers aspiring to be principals will now have to qualify a Principal Eligibility Test (PET) conducted by the board, a circular issued on Thursday said. (TOI)

IITs seek review of fee concessions for special category students. The country’s premier technology institutes, the IITs, have urged the government to replace the policy of providing fee exemption for special category students with direct reimbursements by the government to such students, and replace fee waiver with interest free loans to economically weaker students. CBSE's Three-Language Formula: No language will be imposed, says Javadekar. The government will not impose any language on schools, assured HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar on CBSE's decision to implement the three-language formula up to Class 10. Javadekar also backed CBSE's decision to make Class board exams a mandatory saying, the HRD Ministry will take forward the recommendations made by the CBSE governing body. "We will duly consider it and pass it so that from March, 2018 we will have Board examination for all. Because it was an anomaly in a way. You cannot have discrimination like that," Javadekar said. Class 10 CBSE board exams mandatory from 2018, to include third language paper too. The optional class 10 board exam will become mandatory again from 2018 and students may have to study an Indian language, besides English and Hindi, till they pass high school. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) decided on Tuesday to make the exam compulsory in its schools, doing away with a policy formed five years ago that offered a choice to students to opt for the board-conducted finals or let the institution assess their performance. National Medical Entrance Test (NEET) to be held in 8 languages. The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for admission in medical colleges will be held in eight languages- Hindi, English, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu- for the academic year 2017-18. Also, the candidate qualifying NEET will be eligible for all India quota and other quotas under the State governments and Institutes irrespective of the medium taken by candidates, subject to other eligibility criteria, the Union Health Ministry said in a statement. UGC to grant autonomy to reputed colleges. Following the recent move initiated by the University Grants Commission (UGC), it is now implicated that colleges affiliated under the commission can attain autonomy if they apply for it. The new clause incorporated in the XII Plan Guidelines for Autonomous Colleges explains - the commission has resolved that university will decide about the application filed regarding the attainment of status by the respective colleges within three months of time besides formulating transparency in the policy. NCPCR conducts survey on safe and secure schools. The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) is carrying out a survey on safe and secure schools in the country, with the data being collected directly from students. The exercise will be conducted in 80,000 private and public schools, which comprise 5 per cent of the total number of schools in the country. The study has already commenced in Gujarat. (TOI)

Delhi govt launches software to sharpen school teachers' skills. In a bid to help teachers attain an in-depth knowledge of their subjects, the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) launched a software named 'online in-service teacher capacity-building programme' on Monday . In the first month, the software will help as many 50 mathematics teachers and 70 mentor teachers working in different schools operating under the Directorate of Education. (DNA)

India's first transgender school, Sahaj International School will be inaugurated on December 30 in Kochi by transgender rights activist and artist Kalki Subramaniam. Centre plans special quota in schools for less privileged. Soon, the special quota for Members of Parliament (MPs) will be able to get children from economically weaker section (EWS) admission in Kendriya Vidyalayas (KV). The Human Resource Development ministry is discussing proposals to bring changes in the admission rules for KVs across the country, to make sure that children from financially weaker sections of the society are enrolled under the special quota. Accreditation made easy for deemed varsities. Deemed-to-be universities can go for National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) accreditation even if their off-campuses have not been approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC) or the human resource development (HRD) ministry, UGC has decided. The move is likely to benefit 122 deemed-to-be Indian universities, including Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies University; Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad; Banasthali University, Rajasthan; Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Uttar Pradesh; Lakshmibai National University of Physical Education, Gwalior; and Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai. Parliamentary panel for All India Common Recruitment Exam for teachers. A Parliamentary panel has recommended an 'All India Common Recruitment Exam' for school teachers which would be acceptable to all states to address the issues related to quality. In its 285th report, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on HRD has felt that in order to standardise the quality of teachers, an All India Common Recruitment Exam in the line of Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) would be a step in the right direction.
