Education not commodity, student not consumer: Consumer forum. A youth's plea against an institute for allegedly not providing him with an internship or job as promised at the time of admission, has been rejected by a consumer forum here which observed that "education is not a commodity". A Delhi District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum (West) rejected the plea of the youth who sought refund of the Rs 3.52 lakh fee paid by him to pursue PG Diploma in Event Management and Public Relations at a private institute here. CBSE Class 12 Maths paper will be easier this year: CBSE Board. According to a statement released by CBSE on August 12, 2016, the Class 12 mathematics paper will reduce the difficulty level of the question paper from 2017. Last year, many students claimed that mathematics exam was very lengthy and they could not finish the exam on time. According to a statement released by CBSE on August 12, 2016, the education body will reduce the difficulty level of mathematics question paper from 2017. (India Today)

ITIs to be put under education board, vocational students can avail certificates soon. The Directorate General of Training (DGT), which manages ITIs was moved from Ministry of Labour to the Ministry of Skill and Entrepreneurship by the present central government. ITIs will be put under the vertical of an education board to enable students taking vocational training courses at these institutes to qualify for matriculation and higher secondary certificates, Union Minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy said today. IITs to admit non residential students; IIT Delhi to start it this year. New Delhi Starting this academic year, IIT Delhi will admit non-residential students for the Masters programme. A decision regarding this was taken last year by the IIT Council, the highest decision-making body of the institutes, to admit day scholars who can study from home or stay in a rented place outside the campus. The move is part of HRD ministry’s plan to increase their number of seats to 100,000 by 2020. (HT)

CBSE class 10, 12 exams to begin from March 9, postponed by a week due to assembly elections. The CBSE class X and class XII exams have been postponed in view of the upcoming assembly elections in five states. The CBSE class 10 and Class 12 Board exams will now begin from March 9. The CBSE exams for class 10 will continue till April 10, while class 12 will end on April 29. We gave careful consideration to situations before postponing exams by week which will now allow students to get more time for preparation," the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) said in a statement. Only national awardee principals can continue after 60: CBSE. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has clamped down on the way schools recruit principals by making changes to the bylaws governing superannuation. Now only national awardee principals will be eligible to continue at their post after the age of 60 and that too only with prior approval of CBSE. Until now, the process was fairly simple with even state and CBSE awardees being allowed to continue as principals till the age of 65, and that too without any intervention from CBSE. (TOI)

CBSE likely to postpone Class 12 board exams by a week due to polls. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is planning to postpone Class 12 board exams to March second week owing to the upcoming assembly polls in five states, sources said. CBSE is likely to announce the schedule early next week. “We will ensure there is no delay in releasing the results and students will get enough time between exams. It is most likely the exams will start on March 9 or 10. But a final view is yet to be taken,” said a source. (HT)

CBSE schools to renew demand for representation in CBSE Board. Office bearers of CBSE Schools Associations across India will meet and discuss various issues confronting functioning of CBSE schools, including non representation of Management on the CBSE board, here tomorrow. "Despite representations for the last 25 years, the Government has not heeded to the appeal by the Association of Managements of Private Schools (AMPS) of Tamil Nadu to have a management representative in the board, so that it could help while formulating new policy or change the system," AMPS general secretary A T B Bose told reporters here today. ICSE, ISC exams 2017: To be rescheduled due to assembly election. According to the previous schedule, the CISCE was planning to hold Indian School Certificate Examination for the year 2017 from February 6 and the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education Examination from February 27. The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE) has decided to reschedule its class X and XII examinations, as examination dates are clashing with assembly elections. (India Today)

The HRD Ministry plans to create 20 World Class institutions – 10 in public education institutes and 10 in private. A Higher Education committee has advised the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) to fill up vacant faculty positions in IITs, NITs, and central universities on a priority basis, if the government aims at establishing world class institutions. The HRD Ministry plans to create 20 World Class institutions – 10 in public education institutes and 10 in private, which can be both new and existing ones. HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar has encouraged IITs, NITs, IIMs, and central universities to develop themselves as world class institutions. (DNA)

Haryana government issues warning to schools: Teachers to be responsible for students' poor results. In order to address the problems arising out of students performing poorly in tests, the Haryana government has issued a warning to its schools and their teachers. The schools which have failed to achieve the normative level of performance have been warned and would be monitored again after three months. In terms of district-wise overall performance, Mahendragarh, Gurugram and Rewari were found among the top three, whereas Panchkula, Mewat and Palwal came in the bottom three. (India Today)

Govt plans rules to regulate playschools soon. With frequent cases of sexual and physical abuse of children reported from preschools, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights is ready with guidelines to regulate such private playschools. Once the guidelines are notified by the women and child development ministry, no child below three will be enrolled at a playschool and all such institutions will have to register with the district authorities. Violators will face derecognition and action as per law. (TOI)

Schools seeking CBSE affiliation will again need go-ahead from state. In a major decision, the CBSE has brought back its mandatory no-objection certificate (NOC) rule for schools seeking affiliation. Now, while submitting an affiliation application, schools will have to furnish not only their state's NOC but also a certificate of recognition. The NOC rule had been revoked in 2013 after the then minister of state for human resources development Shashi Tharoor suggested it increases harassment of schools by state education officials. (TOI)

CAT 2016: Results expected on January 10. The results of the Common Admission Test (CAT) are expected to be declared on January 10 according to IIM Bangalore officials. The exam was conducted on December 4 for in various management programmes and over 2 lakh candidates had appeared for the exam. The exam was conducted in two separate sessions. This year, IIM Bangalore was the convener of CAT 2016. The exam was conducted in 138 cities across the country and the duration of the exam was of three hours. All the candidates who successfully clear the selection process will get admitted in 20 different IIM institutes. (India Today)

'Selfies with students' initiative by Maharashtra Govt. In November 2016, the Maharashtra government had announced an initiative called 'Selfies with students', that required teachers to take selfies with students in order to track attendance and reduce dropouts. The selfies were to be taken on Mondays and uploaded on the SARAL-government's online database for education. From the third Monday, they had to only click photos of those students who were not attending school regularly. (India Today)

Disabled may get 5 percent quota in colleges from next session. The government is keen to finalise the rules of the recently passed Disabilities Bill by April 14 which will allow disabled persons to avail 5 percent reservation in higher education institutions from next academic session. According to the bill, specially-abled persons with benchmark disability between the age group of 6 and 18 years will also have the right to free education. The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Bill, which was passed in the Winter Session, provides for raising reservation in government jobs for persons with benchmark disabilities from 3 to 4 percent and in higher education institutes from 3 to 5 per cent. Science impacts lives: Nobel Prize Series 2017 to be launched in India. On January 9, a five-day unique programme will begin in India in order to stimulate engagement in science.
